About Recent work
Hussain's recent body of work delves into the intricate relationship between the animal kingdom and human behaviour, with a particular focus on human-animal hybrids. His fascination with animals is reflected in detailed sketches that evolve into reductive figures by incorporating human attributes and everyday objects. These hybrids, depicted in familiar, everyday scenarios, blur the boundaries between toys, pop culture symbols like WhatsApp stickers or NFTs, and even potential deities in the temple of capitalism. Despite their modern commercial associations, these creatures remain open to diverse interpretations, allowing viewers to forge personal connections.
At the heart of Muzammil's work is the pursuit of joy in the mundane, coupled with a reflective exploration of nature's profound influence on human life. Themes of innocence, beauty, brutality, exploitation, and affection resonate throughout his paintings, serving as both inspiration and social critique. His work is also deeply influenced by hip-hop and pop culture, highlighting the interconnectedness between social media, cultural expression, and artistic creation.
Muzammil’s use of human-animal hybrids is not merely a stylistic choice but an intentional act of unity. These hybrids bridge diverse segments of race, class, gender, and ethnicity, symbolising a deeper, universal connection that transcends verbal communication. By reinterpreting ancient traditions—ranging from Egyptian gods to Greek mythology and Hindu theology—he situates his work within a rich cultural lineage while simultaneously presenting a modern vision.
This approach aligns with his vision of a hopeful future. In a world where hatred often fuels division, Muzammil has chosen joy as his artistic currency. He seeks to create works that transcend superficial metrics of normalcy, asking fundamental questions about identity, belonging, and societal change. His creations encourage viewers to embrace the unfamiliar within themselves and others, using the anthropomorphic hybrids as representations of future beings. Through this process, he strives to foster resilience and courage, encouraging love and oneness as a means to overcome fear seclusion.
